Delhi International Cargo Terminal

A dry port visit was organised by the department of International Business, JIMS Technical campus, Rohini for the first year students of PGDM IB to Delhi International Cargo Terminal, Sonipat on 23rd Jan 2024.

An Inland Container Depot (ICD) is a dry port that acts as a transit point for cargo containers, providing storage and handling facilities for containers before they are loaded onto or unloaded from trucks or trains for further transportation. The ICD in Sonipat, India is a dry port that plays a vital role in the country’s logistics and transportation network.

The visit started with an interactive session for the students, organised by the port authorities, with the custom officers. During the session, they were briefed about the functionality of the whole port in ICD. The students being in their third trimester, benefitted from the port visit as they could practically relate the theoretical concepts learnt in the class. The students witnessed the daily operations of the dry port during the visit. Students learnt the intircacies involved in the export and import procedures vis a vis rules of customs. The ICD terminal also has rail port connectivity which gave students a chance to witness the transporation procedures involved in sending cargo from a dry port to sea port through railways.

The visit ended up with a brief question answer session conducted with an objective of sorting the queries of students. Overall it was a good learning experience for the students.
