As part of the PGDM program at JIMS Rohini, our batch visited the Mother Dairy milk processing plant at Patparganj, New Delhi, from 13th to 15th July 2026. The visit provided valuable insights into the dairy industry's procurement, processing, quality control, and distribution operations.
The visit also highlighted Mother Dairy's contribution to innovation in India's dairy sector. It was the first company to introduce the token milk system, making milk distribution more organized and accessible. Today, its products are distributed through Mother Dairy booths, retail outlets, mobile applications and e-commerce platforms, ensuring wide market reach. The company has also diversified into edible oils through the Dhara brand.
Learning Outcomes
The industry visit enabled students to gain practical knowledge beyond classroom learning. The key learning outcomes were:
- Understanding the Dairy Supply Chain: Students learned how milk is procured directly from village farmers, processed and distributed efficiently while maintaining quality at every stage.
- Importance of Quality Control: The visit highlighted the significance of rigorous quality assurance through the testing of 29 quality parameters, along with processes such as purification, pasteurization and standardization.
- Farmer-Centric Procurement System: Students understood how Mother Dairy ensures transparency by making weekly payments to farmers based on SNF (Solids-Not-Fat) and fat content, promoting fair and quality-based procurement.
- Distribution and Business Operations: The visit provided insights into Mother Dairy's extensive distribution network through retail outlets, dedicated booths, mobile applications and e-commerce platforms, as well as its diversification into the Dhara edible oil brand.
Overall, the industry visit was highly informative, well-organized and professionally conducted. It offered students valuable practical exposure to the functioning of one of India's leading dairy organizations and helped bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world industrial practices. The visit enhanced students' understanding of operations management, supply chain management, quality assurance and business processes, making it a memorable and enriching learning experience.
