Excel-Based Teaching of BCG & Ansoff Matrix

The PGDM Retail Management Department at Jagan Institute of Management Studies (JIMS), Rohini organised an insightful Excel-based practical session on “BCG & Ansoff Matrix” on 9th September 2026 for the PGDM-Retail Management students of Batch 2026–28. The session was conducted by Mr. Lakshya Gursahani, Associate Director – Markets, Energy Sector, who provided students with practical insights into using Excel for business analysis and strategic decision-making.

The session focused on the practical application of SUMIF, Market Size and Market Share, Ansoff Matrix, and BCG Matrix, along with useful Excel tips and shortcuts. Students worked with business data to understand how Excel formulas can be used for conditional calculations and how market size and market share can be analysed to derive meaningful business insights.

A key highlight of the session was the hands-on application of the Ansoff and BCG Matrices. Students explored growth strategies through Market Penetration, Market Development, Product Development, and Diversification, while the BCG Matrix helped them understand product positioning based on market share and market growth.

The session also covered practical Excel tips and tricks, including keyboard shortcuts, AutoFill, sorting and filtering, formatting, and the use of relative and absolute cell references. These activities helped students strengthen their spreadsheet skills and understand how Excel can support data-driven business and retail decisions.

Overall, the session successfully bridged classroom concepts with practical Excel-based business analysis, enhancing students’ understanding of market analysis, growth strategies, portfolio management, and data-driven decision-making.
