Conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur from 2027 onwards, XAT has a four-part
syllabus — Verbal & Logical Ability (VALR) Decision Making
(DM), Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QA-DI) General
Knowledge (GK). XLRI does not publish an official, static
syllabus PDF; the topics below are collated using past year question papers
and the best guide there is — to what really comes in this exam.

Why is the verbal section in
XAT different: Poem-based RCs: reading between the lines for
tone, metaphor and literary devices as required, an ability relevant
only for a few other MBA entrance exams. As per the test, these Critical
reasoning questions are weighted more on logic rather than pure language
ability, hence verbal ability alone cannot assure accuracy.
Decision Making (DM): 21 Questions
For this section, XLRI does not lay down a
theory syllabus, there are no formulas to learn. You are 100% evaluated
via applied judgement (business and ethical scenarios).
Topic Area
What to Expect
Business caselets
Multi-question sets built around a company or workplace scenario
Ethical dilemmas
Choosing between options balancing ethics, practicality, and
long-term impact
HR & stakeholder conflicts
People-management and resource-allocation situations
Data & complex arrangement
Structuring information under given constraints
Assumptions, premises, conclusions
Logical deduction from stated facts
Financial/management decisions
Business-context numeric or strategic reasoning
For XAT 2026, there were a total of 21 caselet based questions, arranged as
6–8 sets — a structure that is likely to remain for XAT 2027.
There is no proper preparation apart from going through the previous year
XAT Decision Making sets and trying to find out why the correct option has
balance in logic, ethics and practicality not as to just memorize which
option was marked correct.
Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QA-DI): 28 Questions
This is the toughest and numerical section of XAT.
Topic Area
Sub-Topics

Ratio & Proportion, Averages, Mixtures & Alligation,

Data Interpretation
Tables, Bar/Line Charts, Mixed Graphs, Data Sufficiency
There are two things that clearly differentiate XAT's Quant syllabus from
CAT's: it has relatively more questions from Geometry and Arithmetic; and
it's one of the rare MBA entrance exams which expects you to be well-versed
with Trigonometry, Statistics, stuff that CAT does not test directly. DI sets are also much
more logical than pure computation, so sometimes it is more important to
read the data structure right than the raw computation speed.
General Knowledge (GK): 20 Questions
Topic Area
What to Expect
Current Affairs
Business, economy, politics, awards, and major news from the
preceding 12 months
Static GK
History, geography, polity, notable personalities
Business & Economy
Corporate news, mergers, government schemes, financial
developments
GK doesn't affect your percentile, but XLRI considers it during final selection
— so you should prepare for this with 15-20 minutes of very low-effort
prep every day (newspapers + a monthly current affairs synopsis) rather than
cramming just in the last week.
Section-Wise Prep Priority
Priority
Section
Why
1
Quantitative Ability & DI
Heaviest section by question count; most calculation-intensive,
needs consistent practice
2
Decision Making
Unique to XAT, directly impacts percentile, and is purely
practice-driven — a high-leverage section if prepared well
3
Verbal & Logical Ability
Similar to CAT prep; RC speed and poem-based comprehension need
targeted practice
4
General Knowledge
No percentile impact, but low-effort daily reading compounds
well over 6 months
How Much Overlap Does XAT Syllabus Have With CAT?
The most overlapping topics from CAT and XAT are in Quantitative Ability,
Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning — you can directly transfer a lot
of CAT preparation material. The exceptions:
- The Decision Making section
is not cumbersome, but it's exclusive to XAT and requires a separate
preparation altogether — no CAT prep can benefit at all.
- Trigonometry and Statistics
feature more in XAT's Quant section than, compared to CAT.
- 5 answer options per question
(vs. CAT's 4) slightly changes elimination strategy in Quant and
Verbal.
Preparing for XAT? JIMS Rohini B-School Accepts Your
Score
Studying for the XAT syllabus can also help your application to JIMS Rohini.
The college takes XAT scores into account when it selects students for its
PGDM programme and for the International Business and Retail Management
streams. It also accepts CAT, CMAT, MAT and GMAT, so your Quant and Verbal
practice is useful for those exams too.
FAQs
Does XLRI release an official XAT
syllabus PDF?
XLRI does not declare a specific syllabus. The sections under each topic-wise
breakdown is based on past years' XAT papers analysis.
What are the four sections in the
XAT 2027 syllabus?
Verbal & Logical Ability (VALR),
Decision Making (DM), Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation
(QA-DI), and General Knowledge (GK).
>Is there a fixed syllabus for the Decision Making
section?
No. There are no set topics or formulas — what you will be
assessed on is your applied judgement on business and ethical caselets, and
the only preparation method is practice past caselet sets.
Does the XAT syllabus overlap with the
CAT syllabus?
Yes, much more so for Quant, DI and Verbal Ability. Decision Making is
the one segment that is exclusive to XAT and has no corresponding part in
CAT.
Which XAT section has the most
questions?
Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation-27 questions: The biggest
section of all 4 sections.
Do I need to prepare Trigonometry
and Statistics for XAT?
Yes. Unlike CAT, XAT's Quant
section gives more weight to Trigonometry and Statistics alongside
the standard Arithmetic and Algebra topics.
Does General Knowledge preparation affect my XAT
percentile?
No, percentile calculation does not include GK marks but during final
selection GK scores are kept by XLRI in consideration.
